“This is my first time in Australia and I wanted to show these people that I am one of the best runners on the planet and I did it today,’’ he told the waiting media.

However, defending champion Jordan Gusman did not make it easy for Kiplagat. In the last 100 meters he tried to open a meter and half lead on the Kenyan, but Kiplagat’s had enough remaining in the tank, and his late kick did not leave further chances to anyone. He would reach the tape first, and Gusman had to settle for the second position.

“The other guys were new to me, so I didn’t know how they were running and I had to get my timing right. It was a matter of staying patient, even in the last bit when he (Gusman) got to the front before I did non panic.’’ Said Kiplagat.

“The crowd was very supportive and cheerful" he said. “I would like to be back in Australia next year.’’
