keitany nycm2018Kenya's Mary Keitany dominated the women’s race with a breath-taking performance at the New York City Marathon, an IAAF Gold Label road race, crossing the finish line more than three minutes clear of her closest pursuer in 2h22'482, second fastest time ever run in New York.

During the first stages of the race, Keitany kept a lid on things, nestling in the pack as world half marathon champion Netsanet Gudeta and fellow Ethiopian Rahma Tusa towed a leading pack of eight through the half marathon in 1h15'49".

“I didn’t want to rush at the beginning to suffer at the end, I wanted to be comfortable so I could be strong at the finish.” said Keitany.

With three miles left to run, Keitany had gained more than two minutes gap over Cheruiyot, her advantage kept on growing as she entered the closing miles through Central Park all the way to tape for a first position.

Kenya's Vivian Cheruiyot had to settle for a runner-up position behind Keytany in 2h26'02" while US's Shalane Flanagan took third place in 2h26'22".
