chebet evans VmarathonDAP's represented Evans Chebet and Peres Jepchirchir secured a Kenyan double at the Marathon Valencia Trinidad Alfonso EDP, a World Athletics Platinum Label road race, in Spain on Sunday 6.

Evans Chebet defeated the main favourites in a high quality field running under the previous course record of 2h03'512 set by Kinde Ayalewwith last year . Chebet produced a stunning 2h03'00" performance to improve on his previous best by over four minutes.

The large leading pack reached the halfway mark in 1h01'40" - well inside course record pace. Eleven runners remained in the leading group reaching 30 kilometers in 1h27'40".

The Kenyan trio formed by Chebet, Lawrence Cherono and Amos Kipruto plus Ethiopia’s pre-race favourite, Birhanu Legese kept up the tempo until the 32-year-old Chebet made his move at the 39.5 kilometers point in with only Cherono hanging on. Chebet and Cherono shared the pacing duties over the closing kilometers trying to keep Legese at out of contention. The team tactic paid off leaving the Kenyan pair to battle for the win. Chebet produced another powerful late burst to take command and cruise romp in 2h03'00", moving up to number 7 on the all-time list.

Our Amos Kipruto also from Kenya reached the finish line in a personal best of 2h03’30" to claim the fourth place.

 

peres jepchirchirValenciaIn the women’s race Jepchirchir stoped the cloak in 2h17'16" thus moving up to number 5 on the all-time world list.

At the pre-race press conference, Jepchirchir declared she was fully confident of bettering her personal best of 2h23'50" given her outstanding performances over the shorter distance this year, 1:05:34 in Prague and 1:05:16 at the World Championships in Gdynia.

The Kenyan found herself alone at the 29th kilometer as Namibian's Helaria Johannes and Kenya's Jepkosgei began to slightly draw back. managing her strength, Jepchirchir raised the pace and cruised home in 2h17'16 unchallenged. Second place for our Jepkosgei Joyciline who crosed the line in a personal best of 2h18'40".
