Chepkwony breaks away from the leading group to take victory at the 2013 Volkswagen Ljubljana Marathon

Breaking from her final challenger with 35th kilometers to go, Caroline Chepkwony cruised to a 2:27:27 victory at the 18th edition of Volkswagen Ljubljana Marathon on Sunday (27). It was a notable breakthrough for the 29-year-old Kenyan, who knocked three minutes and seven seconds from her previous career best, despite battling against a hefty wind over the final four kilometers.

“At the start I didn’t know if any of the other runners were better prepared than me,” Chepkwony said. “I just wanted to run my fastest performance. So after some kilometers running with a group I decided to go on and run by myself to the finish.” She prepared herself for tree month towards this race and it paid off with a great win.
